S&P 500 companies reduced their carbon footprint 7% in the last two years. (source)
There is no national rule requiring public companies to report their carbon emission – let alone to reduce it. Nonetheless, two out of three S&P 500 companies do so.
Why are companies making the right choice?
- Customers demand green. 72% of millennials will pay more for a sustainable product.
- Workers like ethical employers. Job seekers — especially the most talented — expect to make a positive impact through their work.
- Investors want sustainability. Millennials will inherit $30 trillion in the coming years, and 84% say social impact is a central goal of investing.
